Smith and Alexander (2013) suggest that it is necessary to explore firms’ websites because they are a mode of communication by which firms interact with stakeholders. Hence, this study investigates 34 oil and gas firms’ websites and attempts to provide an in-depth analysis regarding how these firms present their CSR information through websites. The investigation is limited to the contents concerning CSR rationales, themes, and practices of the firm either to the whole society or to a stakeholder group. All above information is searched from â€Å"homepage†, â€Å"about us†, and â€Å"CSR/sustainability section†. Therefore, the unit of analysis is the combination of â€Å"homepage†, â€Å"about us†, and â€Å"CSR/sustainability section†, which is concerned with CSR rationales, themes, and practices. Nielsen (2013) claims that a firm’s homepage is valuable because it provides users material information about the firm. In addition, homepages are selected for website analysis because users form perceptions and make judgments about quality and functionality of the website based on initial impression (Ha and James, 1998). Under this circumstance, this study considers homepage as the main source for investigating the firm’s CSR practices.
